Here we have some awsome older talent. Now we can set a goal and know who we are up against. I am sure many Hawaiians can earn a spot on the SOB list. So here they are.

http://30plusbmx.com/?p=1588

S.O.B.S

By Brent Barton & Robert Riofrio
Here’s what Brent Barton, Al Roybal, Rusty Dial and I came up with:
Coming up with a name for this list was not an easy task. Lucky Brent Barton is a lot more creative then the rest of us and came up with the S.O.B.S. Stinky Old BMXerS. I hope this can become an annual list that we put out ever year before Reno. We know the process of picking these riders wasn’t perfect. So feel free to make suggestions for next year. So without further ado here’s your S.O.B.S of 2011.

1. Shawn DiPrete

One word comes to mind when I think of Shawn DiPrete, DOMANATION. Shawn has been the guy to beat in the older ranks for some time now. Everyone is after DiPrete and wants to take him down. Shawn has multi national titles in both NBL and ABA. This year he was up for the National Cruiser title and would have left Tulsa with the cup, if it wasn’t for Verhagen’s one footed push at the finish line. He took home both NAG titles in the 36-40 ranks and won both of his main events at the ABA Grands.

2.“TP” Todd Perry

Coming in at a hotly contested second position is Todd Parry–most commonly known as TP. TP has been the man to beat over the last two seasons in the extremely competitive 41+ Expert and 41-45 cruiser only losing a small number of laps in those two years. In 2011 TP put it all on the line for an epic battle to the finish only to come up short with an earth-shaking pile driver in the last straight at the Grands and ceding the the top spot in amateur cruiser to Verhagen. For 2012, plan to see TP on a mission and the ensuing, ultimate battle royale at the Grands with several 40 year-olds aging into the class–include one Shawn DiPrete.

3.“Big Daddy” Eric Rupe

“Big Daddy” has been a figure in our sport since its inception. He’s done it at every level in BMX. Eric was a champion as an amateur in the early years of BMX and moved up in to the professional ranks at the age of 14. Since then he has multi world and national championships, a BMX Hall of Fame inductee, and a great ambassador for the sport. Eric’s BMX career has come full circle as he is in the amateur ranks again. He had multi national wins on the national circuit this and was up for title in 41 & over expert as will as 46-50 cruiser, which he won. “Big Daddy” can still bring the heat and has a legit argument to occupy the 1 or 2 spot on this list.

4.Chris Verhagen

Perseverance is what comes to mind when I hear the name Chris Verhagen. Chris won the National Cruiser title in ’06. He came back in ’07 with the hopes of defending his title only to have a bad crash that would sideline him for few years. Chris comes back in ’11 and reclaims the National Cruiser title. His win in the 41-45 cruiser class at the ABA Grands was one of the best mains I have ever witnessed. Chris persevered though that main event just like he did with his injury.

5.“JT” Jeremy Thompson

“JT” is a title contender ever year and this year was no exception. Unfortunately Jeremy didn’t pick up any titles this year. I think he was focusing too much on his tweeter game and neglected his BMX training. Even with his tweeter distraction he managed to have good year. “JT” finished #2 in 40-44 cruiser in the NBL and #3 in 36-40 expert in theABA.

6.Scott Mooreland

Scott has been racing bikes since the day they were invented. Scott will do anything it takes to win a race, even if it means putting a nice guy over a turn. His biggest win came at the World Championships inDenmarkthis as he won the 40-44 cruiser class. At the ABA Grands he was the big surprise in the 41 & over expert class. He past Eric Rupe in the second turn, never looked back and won the NAG 1 plate.

7.David “Archi” Archibald

“Archi” is the man when it comes to big race pressure. He is in contention for the National Cruiser title year after year. David always performers when the lights and cameras are shining on him. In 2010 “Archi” finished up #2 in the standings and finished up #8 in the National Cruiser standings this year.

8.Ben “The Flying Jewish Squirrel” Hershkowitz

Ben is fast, no doubt about it we knew this early on in 2011. But he kept getting faster over the 2011 season despite his jacked-up knees. It used to be that I could at least be on the same straight but he proved that was a thing of the past inBoulderCityat the RL Cup West finals as he launched off into the distance for wins on both bikes. And a month earlier he showed the rest of 36-40 with some killer laps that included 3 wins and a second inChula Vista. And another strong performance at the 2011 ROC yielded him a ROC 1 plate but his weekend ended abruptly over the camel-back through the rhythm in Grands qualifying and he subsequently spent some time in aTulsahospital. Ben is healing up and with a new factory ride he is surely one to watch in 2012.

9.Ray Hudson

The truth is we all love our Fly Racing gear so much that we felt we couldn’t leave Ray off of the list… but the voters put him on it anyway so we can, with a (mostly) clear conscience, say that Ray is one fast hombre to watch out for. After aging up early in the year he was immediately a force to be reckoned with and believe it or not picked up his first 20” national win in ABQ. And November in Tulsa Ray stepped onto the podium with a strong 3rd place finish. A self-proclaimed “poor gater”, Ray powered through the rest of the pack and reminded the class of his capabilities. Always in the mix for a podium, keep an eye on Ray in 2012 as he does some damage to the 36-40 classes.

10.Raul Gomez

When Raul came back down into the amateur ranks a few years ago many thought he would be the guy that would take the reigns from DiPrete. The last two years Raul had some good battles with Shawn and at one point his equal. In 2011 Raul has had some set backs as he’s been fighting some injuries. There’s not doubt a health Gomez would be somewhere in the top 5 of this list.

11.Jud Ciancio

Mr. Ciancio claims he has been retired for the last couple of years. But, he just can’t stay away. Every year, since the birth of Jesus, Jud has been up for a title. Roybal calls him the most famous Duck since Donald, I don’t know you guys be the judge. Jud is defiantly fast and should get a lot of credit for giving the older classes some legitimacy. Enjoy your Social Security check and Ovaltine Jud.

12.Doran Brandshaw

Doran is usually pulling double duty on national weekends. Racing the 36-40 classes and pulling T.M. duties for the factory Morphine Team, yet he still manages to get results. Doran won multiple nationals this year and double at few of those races. Mr. Bradshaw finished the season in the #2 spot in the 36-40 cruiser class and the #4 spot in the 36-40 expert class.

Boy this blog is fast moving. Between composing a reply to the Factory thread and posting it, the whole thing disappeared. So anyway, new thread.
I got a call Friday from a guy named Chuck Fieldson. He’s the head of the Stylin BMX team. He’s an old man like me and said he was interested in coming to Hawaii (his first questions were about if we had any Cruiser racing. I told him Bigfoot used to be #1 but that I was now. Naw, I didn’t say that, just yanking Bigfoot’s foot so to speak.) I envy his BMX involvement right now. He was driving to a few races over the weekend with team members around the New York area (hopefully his wife was driving). Jason might know the name. He seems to know a lot of obscure details about BMX that I’ll never hope to catch up with. He said he used to be associated with a factory team. At any rate he said he was NBL NAG #1 last year I think. Very humble guy (or maybe he was setting me up for the sucker punch), but at any rate he thought I sounded like a nice guy too (mutual admiration society) and by the end of the conversation said he was thinking of coming out by himself but now wanted to bring team members if possible.
They’re not a sponsored team, but sell candy bars to raise money for events, kind of like what Jaiden does with his BMX jewelry stuff. Anyway, they sound like a real neat group of people with Aloha from the East Coast of all things. He said they set out about 5-10 tables with their tents to put food on and eat the weekend away. If that’s not shades of Hawaii, I don’t know what is. At any rate, keep your eye out for these guys and hopefully they’ll make it here before too long!

PROMOTING THE SPORT AND THE SANDBOX BMX TRACK

There has been some new faces racing at the track recently and its great, but at the same time it seems we also lose some riders for whatever reason so the moto count and gates seem the same as last year. So I think we need to focus more and put more effort on promoting the track and the sport. I have some ideas floating around in my head, but I think I’m the last person I would ask to go about organizing something lol.

One idea (and I talked about this some time ago with DJ Kraft and Russ K.) is setting up a display at a shopping mall like Pearl Ridge and/or Windward Mall. We could all suit up in our racing gear and have our bikes on display with tables set up with pics and a monitor showing videos showing what BMX racing is all about. I think we should really emphasize the “Family” aspect about our sport so it would really be important to have the groms up to the teens there also as well as some non racing parents. I also think the “cute” aspect of the 5-7 year olds decked out in their gear would really draw a lot of interest. And, of course, we should also use the “BMX Racing is an Olympic Sport” angle as best we can too.

And how about getting the media/news involved again, only this time focusing on how some of our riders are getting great results and getting noticed at the big national events. That would be a great story for the local news.

What about getting a new flyer out and posting it wherever we can. Rec centers, supermarket bulletin boards, store windows, etc..

Still fuzzy about the others ideas I had a while back but it’ll come back to me.

Whadaya think?

Ideas?

Suggestions?

BTW, does USBMX provide some financial help to tracks/TO’s for promoting?
