I agree with JK. If it's marked FRAGILE, that means that the baggage manglers need to check to see if it's packed properly.

Recommend you check the fine print on the airlines web sites if you decide to take the bike as excess baggage. Most are around $100, but be careful as some airlines charge $100 per segment and others will not guarantee that your bike will go on your flight. Get a box from your LBS and measure and weigh it with your bike. Check the dimensional weight on the UPS, FedEx and USPS websites. Just my $0.02.

so i checked my airlines they charge 100bucks for bikes and if it exceeds the weight or size an extra 50. I could try to hide it but I'd rather not go thru some bs at the airport. Gonna go with fedex. Thanks everyone!!

I flew out to camp woodward from denver with my bike and heres how I did it.
I took it apart and put it into a hockey bag. I put my bike, pump, tools, clothes, pretty much everything in my hockey bag. I did drive up check in with my luggage so they took it and didn't bother looking in the bag when i gave it to them. when I opened my bag someone had gone through it but I was never charged for flying a bike. yet when I flew home from State College airport in PA (about the size of a mcdonnalds) they checked it right after I dropped the bag off. One dude pretty much ran the airport so he came and grabbed me while I was waiting for my flight and had me pay the $150 fee.
so its a gamble. you can try to hide it but if you get caught you're screwed.
i'm gonna try and hide it flying out from the mainland to hawaii when I move here, as I trust the Honolulu airport is big enough that they wont be able to pick me out of a crowd haha
