I do it. But why do the rest of you?

Is it for traction, on the street? I find the material of the tires and pattern seem to have way more lateral traction than the old cheng-shin tires...

I'm running Ruben folding tires.

Shoot, I think I got this size tires on my front and rear! I hate it...I am used to Dia-Comp 125 front and 175 rear, no matter for street or dirt, I was used to it.

Nowadays though, I notice that the bike geometry has changed a lot. Long gone are the CW Bars and adjustable height stems. I recently bought a Mongoose Hoop D from Wally World form me and my kid...man, I got a lotta re-learning to do on this one. Tiny bars, tiny seat, HUGE pegs...ah well.

God bless!

yes!

i picked up a s&m new generation dirt bike when i was in california, and it took some time getting used to.

i rode that for several years and got another frame... i hadnt realized the head tubes were being raked! it was so awkward to ride, and im still getting used to it.

in 99 i started using low resistance tires in the rear and a knobby in front since all i was riding was trails. this at the time was a new concept to me, since i had the old school bmx, full knobby mindset.

now i use the 2.25 in front, and while it feels like a balloon, i can get levels of traction that i never imagined possible.

im very happy the softer compounds seen in 26" tires and the kevlar folding bead are more common in the 20" world.

Yo mililani,

Nice to meet you and read your post! LMAO..."balloons" is an accurate description. However, I wish they were helium filled...man alive, I can't bunny hop like before days! Shame sometimes. But I figure, I just gotta keep riding, and get used to this 'Goose...

Times like these, I REALLY miss my Haro, GT, Thruster, and 24" CW cruiser...*sigh*.

Mahalo for your reply...I thought I was gonna be the only one here for awhile!Big Grin

God bless!

Hey guys-

Nice thread, way back in the mid-late 70s (I'm old), I used the big front tire setup 2.25 with 1.75 in the back for racing.. I could only guess the reason was to probably get a holshot in the races. It didn't pan out for me due to my jumping tendancies. So after that I mostly rode with regular sized tires. Back then I only weighed 115 lbs though, way different from now LOL..

Cheers

Yo perfectnut,

Thanks for tuning in, and good to meet you. Yep...being that I used to race "sometimes", but loved to do flatland and ramp stuff also, I kept my tires as is...same as your set up. I am SO mot used to these "Team Issued Mongoose" tires I got now...20x2...that's all it says, and they are both on front and rear...friggin' HUGE balloons...LOL!!!

God bless!
I'm from Perfectnuts era.......The "hot" set up for us was a 2.25 Cheng Shin Blackwall on the front for traction at Campbell's unforgiving turns. I the rear we ran 1.75 snakebellies like those from Mongoose or cycle pro.

I'm still trying to find the Cheng Shin blackwall on Ebay for my build. Creature of habit I guess.......
