JT and Keith posted this incredible video on islandbmx.org of Rory battling it out with the mainland Pro's. This was shot at the NBA South Pacific Nationals in 1979. Everyone in the moto was a superstar back then. Rory beat out some huge name's just to make the main.
1st Denny Davidow
2nd Toby Henderson
3rd Rory INgano
4th Stu Thomsen

Notice the district number? HI 01, Hawaii started out as one huge district covering 4 islands before being separated(1984). Kona is #1, but not sure if it was Kauai or Maui that is #2 and of course we are #3.

I think I still got my #plate like that somewhere. That was right after the HBMX years during Castle Park, if I remember correctly.
Love the snakebelly tires on that bike. I still run them on my Skyway.
One more from JT's vault.
Team Safari (Sept 1981) at Castle Park. The jerseys they are wearing was designed by Barry Ikeda (no.25 in the pic).
The Ikeda's were very well known in the early bmx days. Oldest brother Buddy Ikeda raced for The Bike Shop, Barry Ikeda raced fro JT's Team Safari. Youngest brother Bo Ikeda raced for The Bike Shop / Factory Thruster. I think all three brothers were district top ten at one time or another. Buddy was no. 3, Barry no. 9, and Bo was no. 2 I think. Just my opinion but back in the 70's and 80's it was way harder to be in the top 10. Guys with numbers 11-99 were looked at as being fast to begin with.
Hope I get the Team Safari names correct.
From L to R:
No. 8 Ken Van Orman
No. 25 Barry Ikeda
No. 63 Toby Tsukamoto
No. 46 Stuart Saito
No. 20 Rick Takeshita
No. 10 Marc Kawakami.

Whoa--awesome photo! Been so long since I've seen the Castle Park entrance. I remember getting tickets at registration we could redeem for game tokens in the park, then bugging my dad after the races to let me play video games in the castle. Miss that place!
I agree JK--having a double-digit number plate back then was coveted and meant something. My first number was 879! Thanks for sharing.
Here's a pic from the 3rd Annual Safari Reunion. I can't believe its the 3rd one already.
We watched a bunch of JT's vintage clips as well as some current ones like the Redline Cup. Mostly we talked bmx. Nothing like talking about the good old days of Hawaii BMX with a bunch of guys that raced back in the 70's and 80's. JT's reunions are truly a blast. Kiana, was so understanding.........I took her to the Safari reunion on her birthday.

Dude...........Isn't Craig your brother? Whats with the "according to Mr. Fernandez"?
Why does everyone say "next season"? Rockne says the same thing.
